Background
Money Pit was commissioned by Richard Watsham and Iain Coyle, with Charlie Anderson directing for Liberty Bell Productions. Jamie Isaacs and Michele Carlisle served as executive producers. Filming took place at Alexandra Palace, and Kevin Kerrigan composed the music. Crow TV handled audio and video post-production. Series producer Pat Doyle described the show as a "legal minefield" due to crowdfunding regulation by the Financial Services Authority, requiring the programme to maintain a neutral stance.
Format
Each episode features sixty prospective investors and five contenders. Investors place money into an escrow account as a communal pot. Contenders speak for a few minutes, then a klaxon sounds for questions, during which the sought amount and incentive—either a business percentage or rewards like a facility tour—are revealed. Trading time follows, allowing investors to allocate funds to any contender who has pitched, possibly reallocating from earlier investments. Only contenders reaching their target leave with money.
