Lore & Background
Soul Reapers learn the name of their sword's spirit and train to unlock stronger forms. The first, shikai, binds owner and sword like a contract and changes the blade's shape so its special ability can be used. The second, bankai, normally seen in captains, takes at least ten years to master.
Reader's Guide
Examples: Yamamoto's Ryūjin Jakka controls fire and is called the strongest in Soul Society; Hitsugaya's Hyōrinmaru is an ice dragon; Byakuya's is Senbonzakura. Arrancar also carry zanpakutō, which hold their full hollow power.
During the anime-only Zanpakutō Rebellion arc, the sword spirits take human forms; Hyōrinmaru, for example, appears as a tall young man with green hair and dragon limbs.
