Lore & Background

A new, nameless zanpakutō is called an asauchi and is given to low-ranking Soul Reapers. As the owner's soul imprints on it, it becomes their own zanpakutō, and its once-formless spirit takes on a unique appearance, with an extra form in bankai. The spirits test their owners but exist to protect them, and they cease to exist if the owner dies or loses their power, with rare exceptions such as the Ise Clan's heirloom Shinken Hakkyōken.

Reader's Guide

Examples: Hitsugaya's Hyōrinmaru is an ice dragon, shown in the rebellion as a tall green-haired man with dragon limbs; Renji's Zabimaru is a nue that splits into a woman with monkey fur and a boy with a snake tail; Shunsui's Katen appears as a violet-haired woman he calls "Ohana".

In the anime-only Zanpakutō Rebellion and Beast Swords arcs (season 13), the zanpakutō spirits are given a true presence by the power of Muramasa, an abandoned zanpakutō, and rebel against their wielders. Weeks after Muramasa's death his power fades and the spirits return to normal.
