Lore & Background
Yamamoto set up the Soul Reaper Academy a millennium before the series begins and personally trained Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake, whom he regarded almost as his sons. He also boasted that no Soul Reaper born within the last thousand years could match him. A thousand years before the story he defeated Yhwach, who was then sealed away.
Reader's Guide
Ryūjin Jakka, a fire zanpakutō, is described as the strongest in Soul Society; its release command is "Reduce All Creation to Ash". In bankai, Zanka no Tachi, the flames concentrate on the blade's edge and the heat surrounding him makes him almost untouchable.
When the Wandenreich invades, Yhwach takes Yamamoto's bankai and kills him with it.
