Torpan Pojat began in 1932 as a school sports club in Helsinki's Munkkiniemi district. The men's team first played in the top Finnish league in 1956 and went on to spend 51 seasons in Korisliiga, winning nine league titles between 1960 and 1998. The women's team debuted in the top tier in 1962 but never established itself there, spending most of its history in lower divisions.

The club competed internationally, debuting in the FIBA Champion's Cup in 1960–61 against BC Sparta Prague. They appeared in that competition four more times, and also played in the Korać Cup twice and the Saporta Cup four times. Their record attendance of 9,626 came during a 1996–97 Saporta Cup game against CSK Samara. They also played one season in the VTB United League (2011–12).

In a remarkable chapter, former NBA stars Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen played for Torpan Pojat. Rodman played one game in 2005, scoring 17 points with 15 from three-point range. Pippen played two games in 2008, contributing across multiple statistical categories. The men's team was dissolved after the 2012–13 season, with its place in Division I A transferred to the newly formed Helsinki Seagulls.
