Kataja BC
Finnish basketball club based in Joensuu.
Kataja Basket Club, also known as Juniper, is the professional basketball arm of the Kataja sports club in Joensuu, Finland. It competes in the Korisliiga, the country’s top division. The club claimed its first national title in 2015, beating Bisons Loimaa 3–2 in the championship series.
Basketball activities began at the club in 1955, and by 1961 the team was playing at the Joensuu Sports Hall. Starting in local leagues, it moved up to the national level during the 1960s. From 1976 to 1980, the team played continuously in Finland’s highest division. The first trophy came in the 2001–02 season, when it won the Finnish Cup. The 2015 championship was followed by a second league title in 2016–17. In the 2012–13 season, Kataja entered European competition for the first time, joining the EuroChallenge and reaching the quarterfinals. The club has played in Europe every season since.
Kataja has won the Korisliiga championship twice (2014–15, 2016–17) and the Finnish Cup four times (2002, 2011, 2012, 2023).
