Pantterit (Panthers in English) is a professional basketball club based in Helsinki, Finland. Founded in 1938, it is the most decorated team in Finnish men’s basketball history, with 14 national championship titles, and has also won 5 women’s Finnish championships.
The club began as Kiri-Veikot and competed in Finland’s first official basketball championship season in 1939. Pantterit claimed its first men’s title in 1944 and dominated the following decade, winning 11 championships between 1944 and 1959. In 1958, the team became the first Finnish club to enter international competition, facing Poland’s Legia Warsaw in the Champions Cup. After splitting the two legs (64–62 win, 67–71 loss), they were eliminated on aggregate. The next season, they defeated East Germany’s HSG Wissenschaft HU in the opening round but fell to KS Polonia of Poland in the next.
After a long dry spell, Pantterit returned to the top in the early 1980s, winning the league in 1980 and the Finnish Cup in 1981. That cup win earned them a spot in the 1982–83 Cup Winner’s Cup, where they lost in the first round to Sweden’s Solna IK. The club added two more Finnish Cup titles in 1991 and 1995. In the 1992–93 European Cup, they beat Slovenia’s Tinex Norik Medvode in the first round before being eliminated by Switzerland’s Pully Basket. The 1995 cup win did not lead to international play.
Pantterit struggled in the top-tier Korisliiga and were relegated to Division I after the 2000–01 season. After six seasons, they dropped again in 2007–08. As of the 2014–15 season, the men’s first team competes in Division III, the fourth tier of Finnish basketball.
On March 21, 2026, 18-year-old Pantterit junior Nantii Ruuhilahti scored 103 points—along with eight rebounds, five steals, and two assists—in an Under-19 league game against BC Nokia. The performance set a Finnish record for most points in a single game, as Pantterit won 186–77.
The women’s team returned to the top-tier Naisten Korisliiga in the 1998–99 season, their first appearance since 1970–71. They quickly found success, winning their first league title in 2000 and repeating in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2006. However, the women’s team was dissolved after the 2006 championship due to financial difficulties, and they also gave up their place in the Baltic Basketball League. The women’s first team is currently inactive.
