Air Nomads

The airbending people of the Four Air Temples.

The Air Nomads were the airbending people of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a diverse, migratory people united by the Four Air Temples until the Fire Nation's genocide.

Lore & Background

Each temple was governed by a Council of Elders made up of wise airbending masters, who advised its people and taught airbending; the Northern and Southern temples were for men, the Eastern and Western for women. Every Air Nomad could bend: bending was not inherited but awakened through spiritual practice and a peaceful life, so they lived in temples, meditated daily and trained from childhood. After the genocide Aang founded the Air Acolytes, mostly Earth Kingdom non-benders who keep Air Nomad traditions, and after the Harmonic Convergence of 171 AG Tenzin became the figurehead of a new Air Nation.
