Lore & Background

One year after being discovered as the Avatar, Kyoshi travels the world subduing petty criminals and searching for Yun, her childhood friend who was misidentified as the Earth Avatar and presumed dead at the hands of a spirit named Father Glowworm. She also attempts to decipher her predecessor Avatar Kuruk's pleas for help. Kyoshi's aid is requested by Fire Lord Zoryu of the Fire Nation, who explains that the Fire Nation is suffering from a famine and his avaricious older half-brother Chaejin is taking advantage of the tension to raise support for a coup. During a banquet, the group is attacked by Yun, who seeks revenge on everyone who ever lied to him about being the Avatar. Kyoshi concludes that Father Glowworm has possessed him.

Kyoshi, Rangi, and Hei-Ran travel to North Chung-Ling to seek counsel from Kuruk's former companion Nyahitha. After a confrontation between Zoryu's and Chaejin's supporters, Nyahitha attempts to guide Kyoshi into the Spirit World. Yun attacks Hei-Ran, and Kyoshi deduces that Yun is working with Chaejin. Kyoshi captures Huazo and Chaejin but learns they are not working with Yun. Fire Lord Zoryu arrests an imposter of Yun and plans to execute him; Kyoshi rescues the imposter. She travels to an island charged with spiritual energy and opens communication with Kuruk, who reveals that Yun is in control of his own actions despite having consumed Father Glowworm's powers. Kyoshi pursues Yun to their childhood home and, aided by Rangi and the Flying Opera Company, kills him in a final battle. In the aftermath, Zoryu plans a purge but is stopped by Kyoshi through Lao Ge, leading Zoryu to conceive of stripping all clans of influence.

Screen Rant lauded its darker and more tragic ending than anything previously seen in the franchise, emphasizing the mental and emotional toll of being the Avatar.
