Lore & Background
The game follows the heroes of the Three Kingdoms and Sengoku period, who return to their time after the events of Warriors Orochi 3, having forgotten their exploits. Zeus, king of Olympus, brings them back for an unclear purpose, but his son Perseus (later revealed to be Loki) steals eight Ouroboros bracelets, scattering them across the world. The heroes are divided into four factions, each led by a bracelet wielder, including Perseus, Nuwa, Ares and Athena, and Da Ji with Lu Bu. Loki, a servant of Odin, deliberately scattered the bracelets to stabilize the world so Odin could summon the God of Destruction, grow Yggdrasil, and create a weapon to destroy the universe. Ares kills Zeus and absorbs his power, but later sacrifices part of his life force to resurrect him. The real Orochi assists the heroes against the God of Destruction before being killed. Loki turns on Odin and is killed, but the heroes defeat Odin. The Olympians and Mystics send the heroes back to their time, and they again lose their memories.
Reader's Guide
Warriors Orochi 4 is significant as the final entry in the crossover series, introducing magic and Sacred Treasures that replace type actions from previous games. The Awakening mechanic from Dynasty Warriors 8 and Musou Gokui from Samurai Warriors 4 are unified, and characters central to the story gain deification forms based on Greek or Norse mythology. The game features mashup stages combining parts from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors stages, and includes a three-versus-three competitive multiplayer mode. The Ultimate version adds an alternate timeline story with new chapters, introducing Gaia and Hades, and a resurrected Perseus. The game's legacy lies in concluding the Warriors Orochi narrative while blending mythological elements with the historical fiction of its source series.
