The delta wing, ideal for fast-climbing interceptors, caused rapid speed loss in turning combat. Still, the light loading allowed a combat-loaded MiG-21bis to climb at 235 m/s (46,250 ft/min), close to the later F-16A. The Tumansky R-25 engine featured a second fuel pump in the afterburner. Activating the emergency power rating (EPR, or "ЧР" in Russian) boosted thrust to 97.4 kN (21,896 lbf) below 2,000 m (6,600 ft), increasing rpm by 2.5% and compression ratio, with higher exhaust temperature.
