Cienciano
Peru's only club to win two international tournaments.
Cienciano was founded in 1901.[1] In 2001, the club celebrated its 100-year anniversary by winning the Torneo Clausura under coach Carlos Daniel Jurado.[2][3] That year, Cienciano lost the national superfinal to Alianza Lima.[2] In 2003, led by coach Freddy Ternero, Cienciano qualified for the Copa Sudamericana for the first time by beating Sporting Cristal.[4][5]
The team defeated Alianza Lima, Universidad Católica, Atlético Nacional, and Santos to reach the final.[4][6] In the final, Cienciano drew 3–3 with River Plate in Buenos Aires and won 1–0 in Arequipa on a free-kick goal by Carlos Lugo.[4][7][6]

The same source notes that Cienciano and Melgar are the only non-Lima professional clubs with large fanbases.[1] The same article lists the starting lineup for the Recopa final, including captain Óscar Ibáñez and forward Germán Carty, who was the top scorer of the Copa Sudamericana with six goals.[5] A 2020 AS Perú article describes Cienciano's team as lacking renowned players but possessing an unbreakable motivation.[6]
