Life and work

In 1961, the University of Baghdad formed a football team called Montakhab Jami'at Baghdad from its best student players.[2] Under manager Thamir Muhsin, the team finished top of the second-tier league in 1970–71 and was promoted.[3] The Ministry of Youth and Sports merged the two clubs ahead of the 1978–79 season, keeping the name Al-Talaba and Al-Jamiea's top-division place.[4] The Jami'at Baghdad team came into existence on 17 December 1969 when the University of Baghdad once again joined the official league system of the Iraq Football Association.[5]

With the rollout of the national club system across Iraq, the side was renamed Al-Jamiea Sports Club.[6] A new entity called Al-Talaba Sports Club was created on 27 December 1977, operating under the same institution that had overseen Al-Jamiea.[4] Akram Salman took over as the team's manager for the 1982–83 season.[7] Guided by manager Thair Ahmed, Al-Talaba secured the 2001–02 league title, amassing 91 points from 29 victories, four draws, and five defeats.[8]

What the cited sources add

The Iraqi Football Archive records that Al-Talaba lost the 2000 Al-Quds International Championship final to Al-Zawra'a on penalties after a 1–1 draw.[9][10] The archive records that Al-Talaba lost the 2000 Baghdad Day Cup to Al-Shorta with a 2–1 defeat.[10][9] The archive shows that Al-Talaba advanced to the semi-finals of the 1998–99 Asian Cup Winners' Cup, where they were defeated by Al-Ittihad.[10]
