History
The club was founded on January 26, 1998, by the Lutheran University of Brazil as Sport Club Ulbra, initially operating volleyball, futsal, handball, and athletics sections. Its football department was launched in 2001, and the club joined the Rio Grande do Sul Football Federation. In 2002, Ulbra competed in both the Campeonato Gaúcho Third Division and Second Division in the same year, as regulations permitted, and also entered the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C for the first time, being eliminated in the quarterfinals by Marília. The club won the Campeonato Gaúcho Second Division in 2003, earning promotion to the First Division, and again participated in the Série C, exiting in the second stage to another club from the same state. In 2004, Ulbra finished as runner-up in the Campeonato Gaúcho, defeating Grêmio 3–1 in the semifinals before losing to Internacional in the final; it also competed in the Série C, eliminated by Hermann Aichinger in the second stage. The club made its debut in the Copa do Brasil in 2005, losing in the first round to Treze. It continued in the Série C in 2006 and 2007, being eliminated in the second and third stages respectively. The club was renamed Universidade Sport Club in December 2009, and then to Canoas Sport Club on November 26, 2010.
