Lore & Background
The two clubs had met in a final once before, in 1998. Madrid's win made them the first team to defend the title in the Champions League era, and the first to retain a European Cup since Milan in 1990. They went on to win both the 2017 Super Cup, against Europa League winners Manchester United, and the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
