Lore & Background
The entrants were chosen by the French sports paper L'Équipe as representative, prestigious European clubs, and only some of them, among them Real Madrid, Anderlecht, AC Milan, Rot-Weiss Essen, Reims, Djurgården and AGF, were the reigning champions of their leagues. The first-round ties were set by the organisers instead of being drawn, which was never repeated. English champions Chelsea agreed to take part and were paired with Djurgården, but pulled out under pressure from the Football League, which saw the new competition as a distraction from the domestic game.
