Lore & Background
A first French championship brought Monaco into the European Cup, and under Arsène Wenger, who won the league in his first season in 1988, the club regularly reached the later stages of the competition. Under Didier Deschamps, with players such as Fernando Morientes, Ludovic Giuly and Jérôme Rothen, Monaco made the 2004 Champions League final. In a later campaign it beat Arsenal in the round of 16 before losing to Juventus in the quarter-finals.
