Lore & Background
Celtic were the first British winners and remain the only Scottish ones, and only the second club, after Inter in 1963–64, to win the cup at their first attempt. Holders Real Madrid went out in the quarter-finals to Inter. Thirty-three clubs took part, Spain entering two (Real Madrid as holders and Atlético Madrid as champions), and the Soviet Union sent its champion for the first time.
