Lore & Background
The title opened a run of three wins in five seasons for Madrid. The format grew to six groups instead of four, so only two runners-up reached the quarter-finals, and there were now two qualifying rounds. Champions of smaller nations returned after three years in the UEFA Cup, and for the first time eight domestic leagues also sent their runners-up.
