Lore & Background
The final had been meant for Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium, which lost the 2020 final to Lisbon because of the COVID-19 pandemic and was then given the 2021 one instead. That plan fell through as well: Turkey was on the United Kingdom's travel red list, England was ruled out as a host, and the match moved to Porto. Holders Bayern Munich went out in the quarter-finals to Paris Saint-Germain, the side they had beaten in the previous final. As champions, Chelsea went on to meet Europa League winners Villarreal in the Super Cup.
