Lore & Background
Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off after 18 minutes, the first dismissal in a European Cup final, yet Sol Campbell still put Arsenal ahead on 37 minutes. Samuel Eto'o equalised in the 76th minute and Juliano Belletti scored the winner five minutes later. Holders Liverpool had not qualified through their league position, so UEFA gave them special permission to defend the title.
