Jamie Dimon
American banker and CEO of JPMorgan Chase since 2005.
Jamie Dimon (born March 13, 1956) is an American banker who has led JPMorgan Chase as its chief executive officer since 2005 and served as its chairman since the following year. As of December 2025, Forbes estimates his net worth at $3 billion. He appeared on *Time* magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
Dimon grew up in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York City, one of three sons of Theodore and Themis Dimon, both of Greek ancestry. His paternal grandfather, a Greek immigrant who worked as a banker in Smyrna and Athens, changed the family name from Papademetriou to Dimon. His father worked as a stockbroker at Shearson. Dimon attended the Browning School, a private boys’ prep school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, then studied economics and psychology at Tufts University, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1978. While at Tufts, he wrote a paper on Shearson’s mergers; his father passed it to a client who was a friend of Sandy Weill, who then hired Dimon for a summer job at Shearson doing budgets. After working as a management consultant at the Management Analysis Center in Boston from 1978 to 1980, he entered Harvard Business School, spent a summer at Goldman Sachs, and earned an MBA in 1982 as a Baker Scholar (top 5% of his class).
After business school, Dimon turned down offers from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Lehman Brothers to join Sandy Weill as an assistant at American Express. Weill couldn’t match the pay of the investment banks but promised Dimon would have “fun.” Dimon’s father, Theodore, was an executive vice president at American Express. When Weill left American Express in 1985, Dimon followed him. They took over Commercial Credit, a consumer finance company, from Control Data; at age 30, Dimon became its CFO and helped turn it around. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, by 1998 Dimon and Weill had built Citigroup, a large financial conglomerate. But in November 1998, Weill asked Dimon to resign during an executive retreat. Rumors pointed to a 1997 argument over Dimon’s failure to promote Weill’s daughter, Jessica M. Bibliowicz, though that happened more than a year earlier; another account says Dimon had asked to be treated as an equal.
In March 2000, Dimon became CEO of Bank One, then the fifth-largest U.S. bank.

Reader's Guide
Jamie Dimon's significance lies in his long leadership of JPMorgan Chase, the largest U.S. bank by assets, through the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent regulatory changes. He is known for his blunt management style, using an OODA loop method and carrying a to-do list. His compensation has fluctuated with bank performance, reaching $43 million in fiscal year 2025. Dimon has been a vocal critic of certain financial regulations, calling Basel III provisions 'anti-American' in 2011, and has warned of market correction risks.
