Lore & Background
The Bandito emerges from the shadows of Dema, a city ruled by the nine bishops—Nico, Andre, Lisden, Keons, Reisdro, Sacarver, Nills, Vetomo, and Listo—who enforce a cycle of despair and control. The chief bishop, Nico, was revealed by lead singer Tyler Joseph to be Blurryface, the personification of his insecurities from their previous album of the same name. The narrative and characters of the album were expanded upon in Scaled and Icy (2021) and Clancy (2024), and concluded with Breach (2025).
Reader's Guide
On the album track "Bandito", a piano-heavy ballad, the protagonist accepts his role as part of the Banditos. In the "Nico and the Niners" video, Clancy and the Torchbearer join a group of rebels laden with yellow, and in the "Levitate" video Tyler Joseph raps in a torch-lit mountain retreat filled with Banditos before one of the bishops grabs him.
