Claudio Chiappucci

Three Tour podiums and three polka-dot jerseys, starting with the 1990 breakaway.

Claudio Chiappucci (born 28 February 1963 in Uboldo, Varese) is a retired Italian cyclist who stood on the Tour de France podium three times: second in 1990, third in 1991 and second again in 1992. After winning the mountains classification at the 1990 Giro he set out to do the same at the Tour, and took the polka-dot jersey at three consecutive editions from 1990 to 1992. In the 1990 Tour a first-stage attack with Steve Bauer, Ronan Pensec and Frans Maassen gained about ten minutes; Chiappucci took the yellow jersey from stage 12, the first Italian to wear it since Francesco Moser fifteen years earlier, and held off Greg LeMond until the final time trial, finishing 2'16" behind him. He was the first Italian on the Tour podium since Felice Gimondi in 1972.
