1985 Tour de France
Hinault's fifth, with a broken nose and a promise to LeMond.
The 1985 Tour de France was the 72nd edition, held from 28 June to 21 July over 4,109 km in a prologue and 22 stages. Bernard Hinault won to equal the record of five victories held by Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx; his teammate Greg LeMond was second and Stephen Roche third. Hinault took yellow in the prologue, lost it on bonuses to Eric Vanderaerden after stage 1, saw teammate Kim Andersen take it from a stage 4 breakaway, and regained it by winning the stage 8 time trial. A crash into Saint-Étienne on stage 14 broke his nose and led to bronchitis, yet he held on. In return for LeMond's help he publicly promised to support the American the following year. The heavy time-trial mileage was judged to have decided the race, and later Tours cut it back.
