1984 Tour de France
Fignon crushes Hinault by ten minutes as Renault takes ten stages.
The 1984 Tour de France was the 71st edition, run over 4,021 km in 23 stages and a prologue from 29 June to 22 July. The Renault team dominated, winning ten stages and the team classification; its French leader Laurent Fignon won his second consecutive Tour, beating his former teammate Bernard Hinault by more than ten minutes. Hinault, who had missed the 1983 race through injury, was chasing a fifth title. Fignon's teammate Greg LeMond became the first American to finish in the top three and took the young rider classification; Frank Hoste of Belgium won the points and Robert Millar of Britain the mountains. 170 riders in seventeen teams started, 42 of them Tour debutants, with an average age of just under 27, from the 21-year-old Carlos Marta to the 37-year-old Joop Zoetemelk.
