Mephala, the Daedric Prince of secrets, lies, and murder, created the Ebony Blade. The sword's enchantment absorbs health from those it strikes. Its true power, however, comes from killing friends or allies who trust the wielder. Each such betrayal permanently strengthens the blade's enchantment. The weapon is a physical embodiment of Mephala's sphere, rewarding treachery and isolation.

In Their Own Story

The Ebony Blade is found in Dragonsreach, in Whiterun. It is hidden behind a locked door in the Jarl's quarters. The key to this door is held by the Jarl's steward, Proventus Avenicci. The blade can also be obtained by picking the lock. Once claimed, the wielder can increase its power by killing friends or allies who trust them. Each betrayal permanently increases the blade's damage.

Reader's Guide

To obtain the Ebony Blade, you must first reach Dragonsreach in Whiterun. The blade is located in a locked room behind the Jarl's throne. The key can be pickpocketed from Proventus Avenicci, or the lock can be picked. Once you have the blade, its base enchantment absorbs health. To unlock its full potential, you must kill friends or allies who trust you. Each such kill permanently increases the blade's damage. The blade's enchantment cannot be removed or recharged.
