Annabelle Comes Home
Some things should never be kept in the dark.
Annabelle Comes Home is a 2019 American supernatural horror film. It was written and directed by Gary Dauberman, marking his directorial debut. The story was developed by Dauberman and James Wan, who also produced alongside Peter Safran. This movie is a sequel to the 2014 film Annabelle and the 2017 film Annabelle: Creation, and it is the sixth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise.
The cast includes Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife, with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson returning to play Ed and Lorraine Warren. The plot begins with the Warrens taking the demonic Annabelle doll from two nurses, Debbie and Camilla. During the drive home, the doll attacks Ed by summoning spirits. The Warrens then lock Annabelle in a sacred glass case in their artifacts room, with help from Father Gordon, to contain the evil.
A year later, the Warrens leave their daughter Judy with babysitter Mary Ellen while they investigate a case overnight. Judy, who is bullied at school because of her parents' work, has her birthday approaching. Mary Ellen plans an early celebration. Daniela, a friend of Mary Ellen's, arrives uninvited.
Her real motive is to contact her deceased father's spirit to apologize for a car accident that killed him, which she blames herself for even though she was not at fault. Daniela sneaks into the artifacts room, touches many objects, and opens Annabelle's glass case, releasing the Annabelle demon. This demon then frees other spirits, including the Ferryman, the Bride, a Feeley Meeley board game, and the Black Shuck, which cause chaos throughout the house.
Mary Ellen's romantic interest Bob Palmeri arrives and is attacked by the Black Shuck. Judy and Mary Ellen face other spirits. Daniela returns to the house to return the artifacts room keys, gets locked inside, and is tormented by haunted objects. Mary Ellen is tormented by the Ferryman, whose last victim resembles her, but she escapes to Judy's room, where Judy is being attacked by the Annabelle doll and demon.
The girls answer a phone call that seems to be from Lorraine, but the voice demands they give a soul to Annabelle. They go to the artifacts room, find Daniela, and rescue her. Judy explains they must lock Annabelle back in her case to calm the other spirits. Bob protects Judy from the Black Shuck while she retrieves Mary Ellen's asthma inhaler, and Daniela becomes possessed by the Bride.
Mary Ellen and Judy find the doll when a ghostly priest, acting as Judy's guardian, leads them to the Ferryman, who has the doll in a locked closet. Judy finds the key in the Feeley Meeley board game, and Mary Ellen retrieves the doll. They struggle to bring it to the artifacts room as hands from the board game grab them and Daniela attacks. Judy immobilizes Daniela by projecting Ed's recorded footage of the Bride's exorcism.
Judy and Mary Ellen place the doll in the case, but the demon prevents them from closing the door. Daniela, now freed, helps them close and lock the case. The disturbances stop. Ed and Lorraine return the next morning.
At Judy's birthday party, all her classmates arrive. Lorraine takes Daniela into the artifacts room, where Daniela apologizes. Lorraine then gives her a comforting message from her father. The film was announced in early April 2018 as an untitled Conjuring Universe project for a July 3, 2019 release.
Later that month, it was confirmed as another Annabelle installment, with Dauberman writing and directing based on a treatment by Dauberman and Wan, who co-produced with Safran. At the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, Wan and Safran revealed the film would take place after Annabelle and focus on the doll in the Warrens' museum. Dauberman confirmed it would occur shortly after the beginning of The Conjuring but before many events of the first film. In September 2018, Mckenna Grace was cast as Judy Warren, replacing Sterling Jerins, and Madison Iseman as a babysitter.
By October, Katie Sarife joined, and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga were confirmed to reprise their roles. Principal photography began in mid-October in Los Angeles, with Michael Burgess as cinematographer, and finished in December 2018. Annabelle Comes Home was released in the United States on June 26, 2019, by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. It earned $231.3 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics.
