The Enfield Poltergeist Case
Set in 1977 within a modest council house in London's Enfield borough, the narrative centers on the Hodgson family as they endure terrifying supernatural disturbances. The chaos begins when Janet, the second-oldest child, interacts with a Ouija board, triggering sleepwalking episodes and conversations with an entity claiming to be Bill Wilkins, an angry elderly man who previously died in the home. As media attention intensifies, Janet becomes fully possessed by Wilkins' spirit, leading paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to travel from America to verify if the events are genuine or a hoax for fame.
While local experts like Maurice Grosse and Anita Gregory debate the authenticity, with some presenting video evidence suggesting staged activity, the Warrens initially depart due to uncertainty. However, they soon realize that Wilkins is merely a pawn manipulated by a far more malevolent force seeking to break Janet's will, prompting their urgent return to the residence.
The Vision and Valak
A pivotal element of the story unfolds through Lorraine Warren's prophetic visions, which serve as both a warning and a roadmap for survival. During an investigation into the Amityville murders in 1976, Lorraine experiences a terrifying seance where she sees a demonic nun figure and witnesses her husband Ed being impaled by a tree stump. A year later, while investigating the Hodgson case, this vision resurfaces with increased clarity; the demon reveals its name as Valak to a trance-like Lorraine, who instinctively scratches it into her Bible.
This knowledge proves critical when the couple discovers that their abilities had been blocked by the nun, preventing them from understanding the true nature of Janet's possession. In the climactic confrontation, Lorraine uses this sacred knowledge to address the demon directly by name, thereby gaining dominion over Valak and successfully condemning it back to Hell.
The Climax at Enfield
The film reaches its terrifying zenith as Ed and Lorraine rush back to the Hodgson home to find Janet possessed and standing precariously at a window, intending to commit suicide. As Ed attempts to grab her, they both teeter dangerously near the edge of the roof. The atmosphere shifts dramatically when lightning strikes a tree in the yard, transforming it into the exact stump that Lorraine had seen impale Ed in her earlier vision. In this moment of supreme peril, Lorraine retrieves the Bible where she had inscribed the demon's name. By invoking Valak's true identity, she breaks the entity's hold over Janet and the house. The demon is banished, allowing Lorraine to pull both Ed and Janet to safety just as the supernatural threat dissipates, resolving the immediate danger while leaving a lasting impact on the investigators.
Production and Franchise Expansion
Development for this sequel began remarkably early; by July 2013, even before the first film's release, New Line Cinema was already crafting a follow-up with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson attached to reprise their roles as the Warrens. James Wan returned not only as director but also contributed significantly to the screenplay alongside Chad Hayes, Carey W. Hayes, and David Leslie Johnson. Principal photography took place across Los Angeles and London between September and December 2015, utilizing tax credits from California. The film premiered in June 2016 to critical acclaim and grossed over $323 million globally. Its success directly fueled the expansion of the franchise, leading to a spin-off prequel titled 'The Nun' in 2018, which focused on Valak's backstory, and a subsequent sequel, 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,' released in 2021.
