Background
In August 1977 the girls' mother, Peggy Hodgson, a single parent, called the police after seeing furniture move and hearing her children report knocking on the walls; a constable said he saw a chair wobble and slide without finding a cause. Later claims included voices, thrown toys and the sisters levitating.
Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair of the Society for Psychical Research believed at least part of the activity was genuine, while others, including Anita Gregory and John Beloff, were unconvinced. A video camera caught Janet bending spoons, and the sisters admitted to some pranks. Ed and Lorraine Warren visited the house briefly and said the events were supernatural.
