Tetris & Dr. Mario
A compilation of Tetris and Dr. Mario for SNES.
In 1994, Nintendo released a puzzle compilation for the Super NES that bundled upgraded versions of Tetris and Dr. Mario. Both games, originally on the NES and Game Boy, feature split-screen multiplayer and a Mixed Match mode that swaps between the two. The Japanese version lacks Tetris because Bullet-Proof Software owned the console rights there.

Reception
Tetris & Dr. Mario moved 6 million copies, with a Kombo writer crediting the Mixed Match mode for that success. Nintendo Power called the game appropriately challenging and fun in its day. A GamePro reviewer felt the tight controls and addictive gameplay elevated the experience, and while the graphics and sound were praised, they were not considered essential. Both outlets singled out different highlights: GamePro favored Mixed Match, while Nintendo Power preferred the two-player modes.
They also agreed that owners of the original Tetris or Dr. Mario might not find much new here. Looking back, IGN’s Fran Mirabella described it as a dream cartridge for puzzle fans, and Lucas M. Thomas noted that Mixed Match made it stand out. Noah Davis of The Verge emphasized its multiplayer success. Writer Andromeda said the controls and Mixed Match mode worked better together than apart.
The game landed at number 27 on IGN’s top Super Nintendo list, largely due to Mixed Match. Retro Gamer’s Stephen Westwood called it a personal favorite puzzle game. TechRadar’s Gerald Lynch pointed out its absence from the SNES Classic, arguing the Tetris mode alone justified inclusion. Author Andy Slaven praised the NES versions of both games and compared the package to Super Mario All-Stars.
