Gameplay

The game revolves around two gameplay styles: Puyo style, where players arrange colored blobs to trigger combo chains, and Tetris style, where shaped blocks are placed to clear lines. Opponents send garbage to overflow each other's play field. All modes from the original Puyo Puyo Tetris return, including Swap and Fusion. New additions include Skill battles, which introduce character-based skills and items, and an improved online mode with leagues and free play. Adventure mode features an overworld and JRPG-style Skill Battles.

Story

After the first game, the worlds of Puyo and Tetris separate, causing characters to forget their shared memories. The worlds merge again, seemingly due to a new character, Marle. Ringo encounters Tee and his crew in Suzuran, encouraged by the Keeper of Dimensions, Ex, to pursue the mystery. Ringo gathers Amitie, Arle Nadja, and Carbuncle, and they join the S.S Tetra's crew to chase Marle. They discover Marle brainwashed citizens of Primp Town into constant battling; freeing them leads to Marle's defeat. Marle reveals she was controlled by another new character, Squares. The group seeks Ex's guidance, who creates riddles to help Marle recall her memories. Marle explains she is the human incarnation of the Will of the Worlds, and Squares was created to maintain world order. The friends travel to the edge of the worlds to face Squares, who wants to destroy both worlds due to their merging disrupting order. Marle realizes Squares has an infantile mentality despite his older appearance. She calms him, and the group quells his accumulated power. The worlds separate again after sentimental goodbyes.

Development and release

The game was showcased during a Nintendo Direct Mini in August 2020 and released for Nintendo Switch in December 2020, alongside versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. A Windows version on Steam followed on March 23, 2021. A Nintendo Switch 2 re-release, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, is set for June 5, 2025, adding a Puyo Tetris Doubles mode and mouse functionality. Three 2021 updates added characters including Sonic the Hedgehog, color blind accessibility options, new songs, multiplayer support, spectator mode, a Super Spicy difficulty, and cross-play between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Reception

Nintendo Life rated the Nintendo Switch version 8/10, praising the Adventure mode as entertaining and Skill Battle as adding depth, but noting a lack of new features. Metacritic reported generally favorable reviews, and OpenCritic found strong approval with 78% of critics recommending it. Retro Gamer's Nick Thorpe observed little change from the first game, finding Skill Battle functional but noting that a health bar allowing defeat without topping out felt wrong. He recommended the game to general players but suggested only fanatical players or those focused on online play should upgrade from the first game.
