Gameplay

Welltris, the first Tetris follow-up created by original designer Alexey Pajitnov alongside Andrei Sgenov, keeps the core falling-block puzzle concept but shifts the playing field into three dimensions while the blocks themselves stay flat, all seen from a top-down view. Blocks drop into the well and can be rotated or shifted sideways along the walls, even moving from one wall to another. When a block lands on the 8x8 floor, it slides until hitting an edge or another piece. Filling a complete horizontal or vertical line clears it, with leftover squares shifting to close the gap. If any part of a falling block remains on a wall, that wall freezes, preventing further movement onto it; freezing all four walls ends the game.

Release and reception

Welltris first appeared on MS-DOS and Apple Mac systems, with later versions for 8-bit and 16-bit home computers. The Macintosh IIx edition earned a perfect 5-star rating from Dragon in 1990. MacUser described the game as thoughtful and highly addictive, praising its fresh approach. Macworld lauded the gameplay, music, and graphics but noted a steep learning curve and a frustrating point where falling pieces become too fast, calling it the game’s "one annoying habit" shared with Tetris. The ZX Spectrum port received mixed feedback: CRASH and Your Sinclair both gave 79%, while Sinclair User awarded 45%; reviewers liked the addictiveness but criticized fiddly controls and poor sound and visuals. The Commodore 64 version, with brighter graphics, scored 80% from Zzap!64. In December 2024, the MS-DOS version was added as a free update to the Tetris Forever compilation.
