Premise
A group of teenagers from south-east London chase their dream of dominating the urban music scene. The story begins when Yemi and Jay head to school for their GCSE results. Yemi aces every subject, while Jay’s grades are disappointing. Jay spots a flyer for a local music competition and decides to enter. A grumpy receptionist adds them to the performer list under the name “youngers.” Their set is a hit, and they start climbing the London music charts. Yemi brings in Davina, his secret crush, but she has feelings for Jay. Their friend Ash becomes their manager. As the Youngers gain fame, tensions rise. The group begins to fall apart when Jay and Davina start a secret relationship to keep Yemi in the dark.
Production and cast
The series was ordered for eight episodes in August 2012. Producer Luke Alkin explained that the show draws from the popularity of British urban music, naming Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah as influences for the main characters Jay and Yemi. Composer Aiden Hogarth, known as S.K.I.T.Z Beatz, produced the original soundtrack. An open casting call in early 2012 for the roles of Jay and Yemi drew over 350 actors, all required to have some rap or musical experience. After Ade Oyefeso and Calvin Demba were chosen, filming ran from September to November in Peckham. The final cast featured mostly fresh talent, including the YouTube group and Brit School alumni Mandem on the Wall.
Broadcast
The series was declared a 'hit' after a 450,000 viewer turnout for the first episode. E4 stated, 'Youngers has been a huge success, but we have to let time tell the tale from here, as the following episodes will have to be even better for it to continue.' On 27 June 2013 it was announced that E4 ordered a second series, broadcast in June 2014 with eight new episodes. Calvin Demba, Ade Oyefeso and Shavani Seth returned, along with YouTube sensation Mandem on the Wall.
