A puzzle maker impersonates his twin detective brother.
David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin lead the cast of Ludwig, a British detective dramedy that debuted on BBC One on 25 September 2024. Its second series followed on 20 August 2026, and a third series was ordered by the BBC in July 2026.

Premise
John Taylor, a reclusive puzzle maker who publishes under the pen name Ludwig, has an identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector in Cambridge. Posing as his brother, John infiltrates the police station and becomes involved in solving other cases.
Production
Big Talk produced the series in association with That Mitchell and Webb Company. Mark Brotherhood wrote the script. Executive producers include Kenton Allen, Chris Sussman, Kathryn O'Connor, Mitchell, Brotherhood, and Saurabh Kakkar. Robert McKillop and Jill Robertson directed. Anna Maxwell Martin joined the cast in January 2024, along with Izuka Hoyle, Gerran Howell, Dipo Ola, Dorothy Atkinson, and Dylan Hughes. Guest stars in the first series included Karl Pilkington, Felicity Kendal, Hammed Animashaun, Paul Chahidi, Derek Jacobi, Allan Mustafa, Sam Swainsbury, and Rose Ayling-Ellis. Alan Connor, The Guardian's crossword editor, designed the crosswords in the opening titles and created Ludwig-themed puzzles for the newspaper. Filming took place in London and Cambridge in January 2024. Filming for the second series began in September 2025, with Mark Bonnar, Sian Clifford, Ben Ashenden, and Rumi Sutton joining as regulars. The second series first episode aired in August 2026. A third series was commissioned, reported in April 2026 and confirmed by the BBC in July.
Accolades
The comedy series Ludwig took home the top prize for Best Comedy Series at the 53rd International Emmy Awards in November 2025. Earlier that year, it had already won the Comedy category at the Venice TV Awards and was named Best Comedy Programme at the 2025 Broadcast Awards in February. The show also earned a nomination for Best TV Comedy Drama at the Comedy.co.uk Awards in January 2025. In March 2025, it received nominations for Best Comedy Drama at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards and for Scripted Comedy at the British Academy Television Awards. Additionally, it was up for New Drama at the National Television Awards. Director Robert McKillop was nominated for Best Director (fiction) at the 2025 British Academy Scotland Awards that November.
