Ceri Radford of The Daily Telegraph rated the first series 3 out of 5, calling episode one "soothing and enjoyable, but lacks real bite."
Series two received a more positive reception overall, holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 reviews. The website's critical consensus described the series as a "difficult watch" due to its "patient pacing and unflinching embrace of agonizingly awkward family dynamics," but noted that performances by Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan made it "a highly rewarding experience. Ian Foster of There Ought to Be Clowns called it "a hugely successful return.
The third and final series holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on nine reviews. Jack Seale of The Guardian rated it 5 out of 5, calling the final episode "magnificent TV that will put sunshine in your heart" and noting that the show "miraculously turns tiny gestures into epic romance.
