The Town, a three-part British TV drama, debuted on ITV on 5 December 2012. Created by playwright Mike Bartlett in his television debut, it stars Andrew Scott as Mark Nicholas, who returns to his hometown of Renton after his parents die.

Andrew Scott plays Mark Nicholas, a young man who comes back to the town of Renton after his parents die in what is believed to be a suicide pact. Martin Clunes is Len Robson, the town's mayor, whose drinking problem gets worse as he deals with a series of public relations disasters. Avigail Tlalim plays Jodie Nicholas, Mark's 15-year-old sister, who is rebellious and initially finds it hard to connect with a brother she never really knew. Julia McKenzie takes the role of Betty Nicholas, Mark's grandmother, who has moved into his old childhood room while he was away. Charlotte Riley portrays Alice, Mark's first love, whose life is disrupted by his return, leading her to leave her husband Karl, played by Jon Foster, with whom she has a daughter named Sophie. Douglas Hodge is Inspector Chris Franks, a local police officer who had a long-running affair with Mark's mother Kate. Gerard Kearns plays Daniel, an undertaker fired after dropping Kate's body, who later works as a cleaner alongside Betty. Callum Turner appears as Ashley, Jodie's boyfriend, a troubled teen and reckless driver with more depth than he shows. Goldy Notay is Shireen, the serious and ambitious deputy mayor who struggles to manage Len's unpredictable behavior. Sam Troughton, Kelly Adams, and Aisling Bea play Mark's old friends Jeff, Lucy, and Carly. Toby Regbo plays Harry, a scholarship student who was Jodie's boyfriend.
