Defiance (TV series)

A post-apocalyptic Earth where humans and aliens coexist.

Last updated

The story begins in 2046 on a radically transformed Earth where humans and alien species coexist in the frontier town of Defiance, built on the ruins of St. Louis.[1][2] The series follows lawkeeper Joshua Nolan, his adopted alien daughter Irisa, and mayor Amanda Rosewater.[1][2]

Making and release

Syfy announced the series in June 2011 as part of a transmedia project paired with a massively multiplayer online game from Trion Worlds.[3][2] The series premiered on Syfy in the United States on April 15, 2013.[4][5] On October 16, 2015, Syfy cancelled the series after its third season, citing financial reasons.[6] In January 2012, Grant Bowler was the first actor announced for the cast, taking on the role of the lead character.[7][8]

Filming for the initial season started in Toronto during April 2012.[9][8][10] A second season, consisting of 13 episodes, was ordered by Syfy on May 10, 2013.[11] On September 25, 2014, Syfy confirmed a 13-episode third season for the show, which began airing on June 12, 2015.[4][12]

What the cited sources add

The TVWise article from February 2012 states that the series and game were designed as a single shared world, with events feeding into one another.[2] Bear McCreary composed the musical score for both the series and the game, developing distinct musical heritages for each alien culture.[13] McCreary stated that heavy synths and ethnic soloists defined the sound, and he wrote pieces including alien classical music, jazz, rock-anthems, and torch songs.[13] The Deadline Hollywood article from January 2012 notes that Scott Stewart directed the series.[8]

The Seriable article from September 2014 reports that season 2 averaged 2.7 million viewers and 1.2 million adults 18-49 with DVR playback factored in.[12]
