Plot
Steven, frustrated by his inability to summon his mother's shield, encounters Uncle Grandpa emerging from an ocean portal. Uncle Grandpa assures Steven of his goodwill and reminds him that "None of this is canon." After guessing Steven has "belly blues" and trying various weapons on him, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl arrive and attack Uncle Grandpa, but Steven stops them. Belly Bag introduces Uncle Grandpa as "everyone in the world's uncle and grandpa," yet the Gems still see him as a threat.
As they flee, Uncle Grandpa summons a plot hole from Belly Bag, transporting them to his world. In the RV, Uncle Grandpa introduces Steven to Pizza Steve, Mr. Gus, and Giant Realistic Flying Tiger. Mr. Gus nearly reveals the secret to Steven's shield before Pizza Steve enrages him, and Steven and Uncle Grandpa are sucked into a giant Belly Bag. The Gems escape the plot hole after Garnet breaks the fourth wall, finding Uncle Grandpa, Steven, Lion, and Giant Realistic Flying Tiger having a tea party.
Steven stops the Gems from attacking and finally summons his shield because he cares about Uncle Grandpa. Steven concludes that one should not attack strangers for their opinions. The Gems apologize, and Uncle Grandpa leaves, reminding viewers to "stay weird" and checking Steven off a list of Cartoon Network protagonists. The episode ends with "In Loving Memory of Pizza Steve" because Amethyst ate him in the plot hole.
Production
In February 2015, Cartoon Network announced "Say Uncle" during its annual upfront presentation. The A.V. Club's Kevin Johnson called the crossover between Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa "inexplicable," linking two shows that are "wildly, tonally-different" and share only the fact that "they're both animated in color," adding that someone should check the studio for a gas leak. The episode was produced as the fourth installment of Steven Universe's second season and aired third.
Producer Ian Jones-Quartey placed its events late in the first season, between "Shirt Club" and "Story for Steven." Writers Joe Johnston and Jeff Liu penned the episode, which featured guest stars Pete Browngardt, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Adam DeVine reprising their Uncle Grandpa roles. Writer Matt Burnett initially claimed the episode was 100 percent canon but later revealed it was an April Fools' joke. Jones-Quartey tweeted, "It's up to you and your imagination, cartoons aren't real!" Burnett stated that creator Rebecca Sugar came up with the idea.
Broadcast and reception
The episode debuted on Cartoon Network on April 2, 2015, drawing 1.926 million U.S. viewers. To promote it, the network released the mobile game Attack the Light! Critics praised the episode; Eric Thurm of The A.V. Club gave it an A grade. He noted that while the crossover announcement confused fans due to Uncle Grandpa's surreal style, the straightforward plot effectively introduces the character. This setup lets the show break the fourth wall and experiment with varied animation.
