Lore & Background

5,750 years in the past, while the Gem Homeworld is colonizing Earth, Sapphire and three Ruby bodyguards are among a team of diplomats sent to investigate a group of rebels. Reader's Guide

The episode was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Short-format Animation and was adapted as a best-selling children's book. Its art was inspired by the animator Lotte Reiniger.

When Rose Quartz and Pearl attack the Sky Arena, the last Ruby refuses to accept Sapphire's fate and leaps to save her, fusing with her by accident and forming Garnet for the first time. Blue Diamond sentences Ruby to be shattered for the illicit fusion, but Sapphire grabs her and escapes to Earth's surface. The two get to know each other while singing "Something Entirely New", fuse again, and tumble into Rose and Pearl; Rose tells Garnet that she already is "the answer" to her questions. In the present, Garnet tells Steven the answer was love.
