Plot

While watching the fictional Japanese movie Lonely Blade, Pearl critiques its sword fighting and offers to demonstrate proper technique. At her arena, she summons Holo-Pearl, a holographic version of herself, and spars with it. After winning, she begins teaching Steven the basics, but he grows bored and asks to learn the movie's signature move. Distracted, Pearl is impaled by Holo-Pearl, causing her to lose her physical form and retreat into her gem.

Garnet and Amethyst assure Steven she will return. Two weeks later, Pearl is still healing. Steven uses Holo-Pearl as a replacement, but it only knows how to fight. After it cuts down Pearl's favorite tree, Steven tries to drive it away.

That night, Holo-Pearl destroys the television, and Steven fights back, accidentally activating its advanced mode. He destroys Holo-Pearl permanently. Garnet and Amethyst find him explaining what he learned, and Pearl regenerates with a new outfit.

Production

The episode was written by Joe Johnston and Jeff Liu. Animation direction was provided by Ki-Yong Bae, Seon-Jae Lee and Seo Whan Kim, with Elle Michalka as art director and Ian Jones-Quartey as supervising director. A sneak peek was shared on io9 on April 7, 2014, and Johnston announced the episode on the series' production blog the following day. Promotional pieces were published by Johnston, Rebecca Sugar and color stylist Tiffany Ford. The soundtrack includes instrumental pieces Dance of Swords and Holo Pearl by Aivi Tran and Steven Velema of Aivi & Surasshu. Holo Pearl was composed to resemble the broken facsimile nature of the Pearl clone, using a glitchy piano and an erratic collection of sounds. The tracks were released on SoundCloud on April 12 and 13, 2014.

Cultural references

Gergo Vas from Kotaku observed video game references in Pearl's swordfighting lecture, including Pokémon, Final Fantasy VII, Gitaroo Man and Sonic the Hedgehog. He also identified an homage to Revolutionary Girl Utena in the sword-fighting scene with the hologram. Kendra Beltran of Cartoon Brew noted that Lonely Blade imitated the style of anime, stating that the animation conveyed the intended style without overdoing it.

Reception

The episode premiered on April 9, 2014, in Cartoon Network's new Wednesday time slot, and was seen by 1.098 million viewers. It received a Nielsen household rating of 0.7 and ranked as the thirty-sixth most watched episode for the week of April 7 to April 13, 2014. Kendra Beltran highlighted horror elements toward the end, noting the eerie tone of the rainy night and the sword-wielding hologram. Eric Thurm of The A.V. Club graded the episode an A−, calling it a perfect distillation of what makes Steven Universe special. He contrasted Steven's childishness with the maturity of protagonists in Adventure Time and Regular Show.
