The Empire's rise began when Palpatine, secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, falsely accused the Jedi of inciting the Clone Wars. Manipulating the Galactic Senate into using clone troopers to purge the Jedi Order, he reorganized the Republic into a state meant to "ensure the security and continuing stability." The Senate overwhelmingly supported this shift, lauding his resolve. At its peak, the Empire sprawled across the Galaxy, encompassing fortress worlds, shipyards, and outer territories.

To maintain control, Palpatine utilized various means including ethnic cleansing and genocide. A pivotal moment occurred with the completion of the Death Star, a planet-destroying battle station that empowered him to dissolve the Imperial Senate entirely, transferring power directly to Praetor-officers known as Imperial Moffs, such as Grand Moff Tarkin.
