Marina
The reserved Octoling weapons designer who deserted her army to form Off the Hook with Pearl.
Marina (Japanese: イイダ, Hepburn: Īda) is an Octoling and one half of the pop music duo Off the Hook alongside Pearl. Born into the subterranean Octarian civilization, she served as a prodigious weapons designer who attended elite military training from an early age until adulthood. After hearing the Squid Sisters' song "Calamari Inkantation," she deserted the army and met Pearl on a secluded mountain where Pearl was practicing vocals. Following Pearl's agreement to join after hearing Marina's demo (which was not yet titled "Ebb and Flow"), they formed Off the Hook and relocated to Inkopolis as resident idols. She co-hosts the Inkopolis News broadcast in Splatoon 2, representing Team Chaos during Splatfests, and appears in the Octo Expansion DLC assisting Agent 8. In Splatoon 3's Side Order expansion, she is a protagonist who created the virtual Memverse before going missing.

Reader's Guide
Marina is characterized as reserved and technologically proficient. In gameplay contexts like Splatfests, she supports specific teams based on the event theme. In Splatoon 3's Side Order expansion, she offers toggleable upgrades called "Hacks" to assist Agent 8 in exchange for currency, augmenting various gameplay mechanics. Her narrative role involves creating and managing virtual worlds, as seen with the Memverse where she was held captive by Order. Fans often perceive her as a fan-favorite due to her cheery disposition, particularly during virtual Splatfests. While Pearl handles the rap-inspired delivery described in voice direction as "acting like a spoiled child," Marina's performance complements this with her own distinct style, though both actresses found conveying the fictional "squid language" to be the most challenging aspect of their roles.
Did You Know?
- During the Octo Expansion, if Agent 8 fails a challenge at least twice, Marina offers to rewire the metro's security system into treating it as completed, effectively skipping it.
- Voice actress Alice Peralta and Rina Itou both felt that adequately conveying the fictional "squid language" was the most challenging part of their performance.
