Lore & Background

In Sly 2, Bentley decides to help out in the field, but later on his legs are injured under the jaws of Clock-La, so he is forced into a wheelchair, which he equips with gadgets; he has since become more relaxed and confident in his abilities and himself. It is also stated that he co-constructed a time machine along with his ex-girlfriend, Penelope, which serves as the key object in the third and fourth games. He is the current guardian of the Thievius Raccoonus, having been entrusted to him by Sly.

In Their Own Story

The vault door hummed with ancient machinery, its lock a maze of gears and symbols. Bentley wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, his fingers dancing across his laptop's keyboard. 'Almost there,' he muttered, the screen flickering with lines of code. The others were counting on him—Sly, poised on a rafter above, and Murray, waiting by the getaway van. A final click echoed through the chamber, and the door groaned open. 'Got it,' Bentley said, a rare smile crossing his beak. But as he rolled forward, a pressure plate clicked beneath his wheels. His eyes widened. 'Oh, dear.' The floor began to tremble—and then split into a grid of collapsing stone tiles. Bentley slammed his laptop shut, hit the rocket boosters on his chair, and launched himself across the chasm, yelling, 'I did NOT budget for this!'
