Humanity split by the return of magic.
Humans remain the baseline race of Shadowrun's Sixth World, but the return of magic in 2011 split humankind into metatypes: some humans changed into or gave birth to elves and dwarves, and others goblinized into orks and trolls.

Reader's Guide
The word metahuman can mean all of humanity including these races, or only the non-human ones, depending on context. Dragons able to take human form have also returned and often hold high corporate positions. Human is one of the four races in the 2007 Shadowrun shooter.
