Seed (2006 video game)
A combat-free MMORPG focused on politics and manual labor.
Last updated
Seed was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Danish studio Runestone Game Development. It aimed for a radically different experience by focusing on character interaction and politics, with combat entirely removed from the design. The game was released to the public on May 2, 2006, but Runestone filed a bankruptcy petition on September 28, 2006, citing a lack of money due to failing to achieve a partnership deal with publishers and MMO companies.
Story
After colonizing the Moon and Mars, humanity sought to spread across the universe using ram scoop propulsion. Five seed ships, each a kilometer long, were built with terraforming machinery. They carried DNA codes, sperm, and eggs in cryocoolers, to be hatched by TAU computers.
The TAU computers also held human knowledge, but references to wars and violence were excluded to create idealist societies. The first suitable planet was found near Beta Hydri, 24.4 light years from the Sun. However, something went wrong, and the colony arrived on an unterraformed planet without contact with Earth.
Did You Know?
- Players could manufacture new technology and repair degrading station parts.
- Letting too many failing systems in the station rendered machinery unavailable until players repaired them.
- The Terraforming Assistance Unit is the central AI of the colony.
