Last updated
Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free-to-play online action role-playing game developed and published by Sega as a successor to Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe.[1] According to a 2021 report, the game's revenue exceeded $900 million from its 2012 launch onward.[2]
Making and release
The creators chose not to name it Phantasy Star Online 3 to avoid splitting the player base.[3] February 2013 marked the debut of a PlayStation Vita edition, which was discontinued in September 2020.[4] April 2016 brought a version for PlayStation 4.[4] On June 9, 2021, a major updated "shared universe" title called Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis launched.[3]
What the cited sources add
Players become a member of a research expedition called Arks, a fleet of interplanetary ships researching planets.[5] The game inspired the television anime Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation, which features a completely original story.[6] A web manga titled Puso Ni Comi: Phantasy Star Online 2 Comic inspired web anime shorts that began streaming weekly in January 2019.[6] The New Genesis update marks the 20th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online and features an upgraded graphics engine and game system.[6]
Players can switch between the "twin universes" of Phantasy Star Online 2 and New Genesis.[6]
