The nervous shark (Carcharhinus cautus) gets its common name from its skittish behavior around people. This requiem shark, part of the family Carcharhinidae, is found in shallow coastal waters off northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It is a small species, usually brownish or grayish, reaching 1.0–1.3 meters (3.3–4.3 feet) in length, with a short, blunt snout, oval eyes, and a notably large second dorsal fin. The leading edges of most fins have a fine black margin, and the lower lobe of the tail fin is tipped in black.

Its diet consists mainly of small bony fish, but it also eats crustaceans, mollusks, and even snakes. The nervous shark is viviparous, meaning embryos develop inside the female and are nourished via a placental connection. Life history details, such as the timing of breeding and gestation length, appear to vary with latitude. Females give birth to litters of one to six pups, either every year or every other year. This harmless shark is occasionally caught as bycatch in coastal gillnet fisheries, and possibly also by line and trawl fisheries. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists it as Least Concern.

Australian ichthyologist Gilbert Percy Whitley first described the nervous shark in 1945 as a subspecies of *Galeolamna greyi* (now a synonym for the dusky shark, *Carcharhinus obscurus*). He gave it the name *cauta*, from the Latin for "cautious," due to its wary reaction to humans. Later researchers recognized it as a distinct species within the genus *Carcharhinus*. The type specimen—the preserved skin and teeth of a 92 cm (36 in) female—was collected in Shark Bay, Western Australia.

Based on physical features, Jack Garrick suggested in 1982 that the nervous shark is closely related to the blacktip reef shark (*C. melanopterus*). In 1988, Leonard Compagno tentatively grouped these two with the blacknose shark (*C. acronotus*), copper shark (*C. brachyurus*), silky shark (*C. falciformis*), and night shark (*C. signatus*). A 1992 study using allozymes and a 2011 study using nuclear and mitochondrial genes both confirmed a close relationship between the nervous and blacktip reef sharks.

The body is stout and spindle-shaped, with a short, broadly rounded snout. Each nostril has a slender, nipple-shaped lobe on its front edge.

It is found over continental and insular shelves off northern Australia from Shark Bay to Moreton Bay, as well as off Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, generally in shallow inshore waters to a depth of at least 45 m (148 ft), favoring mangrove-lined areas with sandy-muddy bottoms.

The diet consists mainly of small teleost fishes, with crustaceans and molluscs as secondary food sources, and it occasionally preys on semiaquatic snakes. The nervous shark is viviparous, with embryos nourished through a placental connection. Life history details vary with latitude: in Darwin Harbor, mating occurs from January to March and birthing in October and November after an 8–9 month gestation; in Shark Bay, mating occurs from late October to early November and birthing about a year later after an 11-month gestation. Females produce litters annually in Darwin Harbor and biennially in Shark Bay. Newborns measure 35–40 cm (14–16 in) long and are birthed in shallow nursery areas.
