The Dasyatidae family, known as whiptail stingrays, belongs to the order Myliobatiformes. These rays inhabit tropical to temperate marine waters across the globe, with some species also entering freshwater environments in Africa, Asia, and Australia. Their bodies feature flattened pectoral fin discs that are oval or diamond-shaped. The name "whiptail" comes from their long, whip-like tails, which extend well beyond the disc and lack dorsal and caudal fins. Nearly all whiptail stingrays—except the porcupine ray (*Urogymnus asperrimus*)—possess one or more venomous stings near the tail base, used for defense. To sting, they jerk their tails, causing the stinger to detach and remain in the wound. The stinger is pointed, sharp, and edged with jagged barbs. During mating, males grip females using teeth that curve toward the corners of their mouths. Their size ranges from 0.18 to 2.0 meters (0.59 to 6.56 feet) across, or more for the smalleye stingray and giant freshwater stingray. Highly electroreceptive, these rays detect weak electric fields from prey through a network of pores in their skin, part of the ampullae of Lorenzini.

The family's taxonomy was revised in 2016 by Peter Last, Gavin Naylor, and Mabel Manjaji-Matsumoto, based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic data. The genus *Megatrygon* is provisionally placed within Dasyatidae pending further research, as evidence suggests it may be more closely related to the families Potamotrygonidae and Urotrygonidae.

Whiptail rays are typically found in shallow tropical waters but also occur in temperate regions. Their flat bodies make them demersal, meaning they live on the seafloor, often buried in sand or mud, or near coral reefs on continental shelves. They usually inhabit shallow coastlines at depths of 100 to 200 meters, though some descend to 600 meters. To avoid predators, they often stay buried with only their eyes exposed. Taxonomic Journey and Scientific Identity

The species first entered the scientific record in 1875, when Frederick Hutton, curator at the Otago Museum in New Zealand, described a 1.2-metre female captured off Dunedin. He published his account in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, coining the name Trygon brevicaudata from the Latin words for short and tail. For well over a century the animal was lumped under the genus Dasyatis, a catch-all that grouped many unrelated rays together. It was not until a 2016 revision by Last and colleagues that the genus Bathytoshia was formally resurrected for this species alongside the broad and roughtail stingrays, restoring a more precise taxonomic home. The ray has accumulated a remarkable catalogue of common names—giant black ray, Schreiners ray, short-tailed stingaree, smooth short-tailed stingray, among others—reflecting its wide geographic footprint and the many fishing communities that encounter it. Molecular phylogenetic work in the same 2016 review further complicated the picture by absorbing the pitted stingray of the northwestern Pacific and another species into the same taxon, while records from northern Australia and Thailand are now regarded as probable misidentifications of look-alike species.
