Heliobatis

Heliobatis is an extinct genus of stingray belonging to the family Dasyatidae within the order Myliobatiformes. Currently, the genus includes only one recognized species: Heliobatis radians. Most fossils of this ray come from the Early Eocene, specifically the Wasatchian stage, in the Fossil Lake deposits of the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Along with Asterotrygon maloneyi—which was not identified and formally described until 2004—Heliobatis is one of just two ray species known from the Green River Formation.
The genus was first established based on a single, incomplete holotype specimen (catalog number YPM 528), which is housed at the Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, Connecticut. This specimen, showing the fish from a dorsal view, was collected from a Fossil Lake outcrop and initially studied by the prominent American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh. He published a brief type description in the *American Journal of Science* in 1877. Two years later, Marsh’s rival Edward Drinker Cope described a different ray specimen, naming it *Xiphotrygon acutidens*. Although Cope’s description was more detailed and included an illustration, the earlier name *Heliobatis* took priority. In 1947, Henry Weed Fowler published a short description of another ray genus, *Palaeodasybatis discus*, based on a partially restored specimen (ANSP 89344) from the Academy of Natural Sciences. That specimen was later lost, but it was noted for having a more rounded, disc-like body than *Heliobatis*. However, based on illustrations of Fowler’s type, *Palaeodasybatis* was synonymized with *Heliobatis*, with the rounder shape attributed to the incomplete nature of Marsh’s original holotype.
The name *Heliobatis* combines the Greek words *helios* (meaning “the sun”) and *batis* (meaning “skate” or “ray”). The specific name *radians* was not explained in Marsh’s original description.
In terms of size, *Heliobatis* reached up to about 50 centimeters (20 inches) in length. Like modern stingrays, the species showed sexual dimorphism, with males possessing claspers. Individuals typically had up to three modified dermal denticles on their tails that formed barbed stingers, though many specimens are found with fewer than three. The genus is thought to have been demersal, living near the seafloor.

Heliobatis is notably abundant at the same site on Fossil Lake where the only Green River Formation crayfish, Procambarus primaevus, and prawns Bechleja rostrata are found. The genus has a long tail which is very slender, often missing the tip, sporting small spines along the dorsal midline. The tail provides up to half of the total body length.
